Yard House sits right in the heart of Chinatown, an easy walk to the Capital One Arena and a reliable place to settle in before a Caps home game. We got there early to watch our Ravens play the Bills (unfortunately ending in a devastating loss) and were able to grab seats at the bar, which already felt like a win on a busy Sunday afternoon.
The vibe is that of a classic sports bar. 80s pop music filled the room (Blondie, Men Without Hats, Chumbawamba, and the rest of the MTV-era playlist). We had fun quizzing each other on the names of the bands. Every TV was locked in on an NFL game. Hockey and football fans packed the place, creating a high-energy pre-game buzz without feeling overcrowded.
The draft list is massive, one of the bigger selections you’ll find this close to the arena. We started with the house lager (Twenty Five) alongside a Miller Lite. The house lager came across watered down and light on flavor; next time our “Go-To” Miller Lite (or something else from the extensive list) might be the safer call. The beers were pint sized and stayed relatively cold while we were enjoying them, which is always a plus.
We started with a Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel which arrived piping hot with a crisp exterior and a soft, pillowy interior. Salt level was spot-on. It came with a generous amount of beer cheese and a side of horseradish mustard that had a nice sharp bite to it. On its own the pretzel was fine but not noteworthy; the cheese and mustard (or both together) turned it into a solid pre-game snack.
Ordered medium with no mushrooms, the Whiskey and Aged Cheddar Burger arrived cooked exactly to spec. The meat of the patty was tender and loose-knit, the sign of a burger that isn't overworked. It stayed juicy, with a crumbly bite that melted in the mouth. The whiskey sauce brought a nice, sweet smokiness that worked well with the aged cheddar. This was a damn good burger. The burger came with a basket of fries which were light and crispy.
We also ordered the Korean BBQ Cheesesteak which was equally as good. The beef was finely chopped and had some nice crispy bits from kissing the griddle top. Gochujang and kimchi added a nice umami flavor and a bit of heat. The roll was nice and soft, and a heavy sprinkle of sesame seeds added crunch. The portion size was generous and messy in the best way. We ordered garlic-parm fries as a substitute for the regular fries, but we received regular fries instead which was a bit disappointing. This was really the only miss of the meal.
Yard House delivers classic American bar food in a high-energy setting that’s genuinely convenient before a Caps game. They don’t take reservations, so arriving early is the best strategy if you want a seat at the bar or a table without a long wait. The atmosphere is lively and sports-focused, and the food quality is better than average for a sports bar, as well as a good value for the portions and the location. We will definitely be back here again.
